Let me narrate a short story of Mahabharat to describe this holy day, Bhisma Dwadashi.
Shantanu's wife Ganga gave birth to a son named, Dev- Vrat. Ganga wanted Dev-Vrat to the successor of Shantanu which Shantanu couldn't agree. After knowing all these incidents, adult Dev-Vrat swore not to marry his whole life. Shantanu gave him a boon where Dev-Vrat could himself choose his death.
Dev-Vrat later was known as Bhisma Pitamaha. During the battle of Mahabharata, Bhisma was defeated by Arjun and was lying on the bed of arrows penetrating his body. Bhisma choose to die as the Uttarayana commenced. Bhisma Dwadashi is the day when Pandavas offered death rituals to Bhisma. This day greatly acknowledges Bhisma and his contribution. This day is also remembered as an auspicious day to recite VishnuSahastranam, the book which has 100 names of Vishnu and its relevance.
My best wishes on this day.
